Bees and Rosebuds

"Methinks it is a token of healthy and gentle characteristics, when women of high thoughts and accomplishments love to sew, especially as they are never more at home with their own hearts than while so occupied." ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Marble Fawn, 1859

I have had a little sketch in my sketchbook that has developed over the weeks. There is a bit of a surprise that I have for you- something you may not be suspecting- it is what surrounds this industrious young woman. Weeks ago, I came upon an old vintage image- one I will share when this is all finished. It was all I needed to set the wheels in my mind moving - even into the night as colors and imagery kept me from sleep. In the morning, I would look upon my sketch again as I woke up with my morning coffee.

On a side note, I have to say that I love and ADORE the rug-hooking pattern that was featured in Primitive Quilts Spring issue- Tonya Robey of Mad Hen Primitives. Sooooooo......I am hooking it a bit at a time- one lambs-tongue at a time- using scraps of past projects- what do you know? Tonya Robey's pattern includes a cute little lady- my favorite! I am trying to decide if I will hang it or allow it on a floor- I do know one thing- I love the design!!

My 'Needle Work' project should not take long to finish and I think you will be quite surprised when you see the whole thing!

God bless you!

  1. Now you've got our curiosity piqued! I know exactly what you mean about not being able to sleep sometimes because of all the ideas floating around in my head! LOL Fun that you're working on two projects at once....

  2. I am making the same rug-- i don't like how they laid out the pattern on the sheet but it was simple enough to piece together. Looking forward to seeing your new designs. Greetings from Long Island, NY...my first comment on your blog (came here from etsy where i am a little obsessed with your maple sugaring design)...

  3. 'Joseph' the Maple Syrup rug is very popular- I have sold quite a few of those. Glad you are 'obsessed!' Makes my heart glad!!
Margaret, on your rug you are doing from Primitive Quilts, are you using the very same colors in your lambs-tongues? I reeeeeaaaalllly like the designers colors she used but I want to use loose strips I have.
Gayle, I do not know why on earth my brain is at it's peak creative state late at night, but it is- maybe it is the quiet stillness of the house, or that I am tired and very relaxed- who knows! Although today an image passed through my head and has been lingering- it can start with something as simple as a color- one color and a whole design gets created off of it! LOL

    1. I did the house in shades of gray, the skirt in rust. I went fairly close othersise, but used olive textures in the background and instead of black/brown, used dark burgundy shades. I like the background she used better than mine, because in some spots there's not enough contrast. Looking forward to seeing yours when it's done.
